I spent the week leading up to the European Marathon Championships resting after the Trans Germany. I went for easy rides on the course together with Nina Gassler (Hard Rocx Racing) which was really good fun. It was so nice to spend time riding easy, relaxing with Dave, eating nice food and generally not doing very much at all.

I had a really good sleep last night, which is unusual for me during stage races! Normally all of the gels and carbs keep me lying awake for most of the night. Stage racing is like groundhog day - same routine everyday: wake up at 4:45am, race at 7:00am, shower, massage, eat, sleep, and then do it all again! Fortunately I love it :D

Today was about playing safe with the sole aim of securing our overall race win. We checked the weather forecast last night and low temperatures (only 1 degree in the morning!) and rain were forecast, this combined with the height gain during the stage meant that we knew we would be in for a cold day! ﻿

After the stage yesterday we noticed some small cuts in my tyres so we decided to take no chances and to change them. It’s always good to know that your equipment is in good condition at the start of a stage. Dave is doing an excellent job of team supporter and we know that it would be so much harder without his help.

Andalucia Bike Race</title><summary type='text'>Today we moved stage towns from Cordoba to Jaen. The temperature has really dropped here and it was only 4 degrees when we set off this morning *Brrrrr* The low temperature combined with the altitude today meant that we wore many more clothes than the previous stages and this proved to be a good decision because it was really cold at 1200 metres.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, it did! Today was definitely the best stage. There was a lot of tight twisty single track; some super steep, rocky technical climbs; and fast, rocky descents with drop offs. Training has been broken into blocks of four days. Blimey! I had a really relaxing Christmas and took a week off the bike. I finally found out what was wrong with my ‘new’ bad knee: a bursitis, which I think was caused by thick winter cycling tights rubbing the pre-patella bursa. Bad luck! Fortunately both knees are fine now, touch wood :)

Just!</title><summary type='text'>After a ride a couple of weeks ago my (normally) good left knee started to hurt. I put it down to the cold weather and/or some new eccentric knee exercises prescribed by a physiotherapist for my right knee. Since my last race (Roc D'Azur) at the beginning of October, I had about two weeks off the bike and for the last 3 weeks I've been riding off road with friends and generally just playing around on my bike. This venue also hosted the National XC Champs in July. In the UK it's extremely difficult to host a one lap marathon because stringent by-laws make it difficult to hold competitive races on public roads and bridleways. It's typical therefore to see multiple lap events.
